چکیده

was found that PQ-9 was required for both photoreduction of ferricyanide and photosynthetic phos, phorylation in Euglena chloroplasts. The structural integrity of PQ-9 was not required to the same degree in the 2 photochemical reactions. Photosynthetic phosphorvyation seemed to require the entire molecular structure of PQ-9 for the activity, whereas shortening in isoprenoid ch-ain and modification of quinoid nu.cleus of PQ-9 do not seem to alter the photoreduction aotivity significantly. Addition of PQ-9 to the lyophilized Euglena ohloroplasts inhibited the photoreduction of ferricyanide significantly, while it stimulated photosynthetic phosphorylation activity.

A Study of Plastoquinones in Photochemical Reactions in the Chloroplasts of Euglena gracilis Strain Z.

Plastoquinone-9 (PQ-9) was isolated from the chloroplasts of Euglena gracilis Strain Z and spinach. The functional involvement and the structural specificity of PQ-9 in photochemical reactions was investigated in the isolated chloroplasts of Euglena gracilis. It was found that PQ-9 was required for both photoreduction of ferricyanide and photosynthetic phosphorylation in Euglena chloroplasts. T...

Partial Reactions of Photosynthesis in Briefly Sonicated Chlamydomonas: II. Photophosphorylation Activities.

Briefly sonicated Chlamydomonas reinhardi cells are capable of both cyclic and noncyclic photophosphorylation and, in each case, the maximum rates approach those reported for higher plant chloroplasts. Photophosphorylation coupled to ferricyanide reduction occurs with a P/2e ratio approaching unity. The conditions for optimum activity are similar to those reported for spinach or swiss chard chlo...

Ultraviolet Sensitive Factors in the Cytoplasm That Affect the Differentiation of Euglena Plastids

The bleaching phenomenon in Euglena gracilis strain z offers a unique possibility for investigating the hereditary nature of plastids. Trea tment of Euglena cultures with streptomycin, elevated temperature, or irradiation with a mild close of U V light causes the permanent loss of the capacity to develop chloroplasts in the growing cultures. Early explanations of this phenomenon were that the b...

Dna-dependent Rna Synthesis in Chloroplasts of Euglena Gracilis

Isolated chloroplasts of Euglena gracilis have been shown to be capable of incorporating amino acids into protein (2). This incorporation is inhibited by actinomycin D, a fact which suggests that the chloroplasts might be capable of DNAdependent RNA synthesis. Such RNA synthesis is also indicated in a recent report (6) showing inhibition of chlorophyll synthesis by actinomycin. In conjunction w...

Chromium- and copper-induced inhibition of photosynthesis in Euglena gracilis analysed on the single-cell level by fluorescence kinetic microscopy.

Here, we investigated effects of copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) toxicity on two contrasting strains of Euglena gracilis, with and without chloroplasts, grown in culture media promoting either phototrophic or heterotrophic growth. This led to insights into Cr/Cu toxicity mechanisms and into the regulation of phototrophic vs heterotrophic metabolism. Our data strongly suggest that in Cu(2+) and Cr...
